A new mix from the vinyl vaults, coming by way of an invite to do a guest one hour slot on Glasgow’s Radio Buena Vida, which is always an hour to do. In more recent years I’ve been going to their headquarters in Glasgow’s South Side and DJ-ing in the front window booth they have set up there, with myself opting just to play vinyl LPs and singles from my collection as it’s something I very rarely do. With the radio show format there’s less pressure for dancefloor fillers which is obviously far more important in a club DJ set, so this allows me to get a bit more experimental and play a broader range of the numerous many genres that I listen to.
The slot that was scheduled also happened to land on my birthday, so I had fun on “my” day of the year and figured I’d go out all guns firing.
For this particular mix I dug through the whole collection, including 7″ singles — which I often forget about — and cobbled together a spectrum of tracks that starts off more minimal and electronic in the first half, and then with a mid-point intermission the remaining half hour veers into more guitar-based, post-punk, ultimately getting more noisier and chaotic. I like to think of this set being an analogy to an actual birthday party: it starts off pleasant, energetic and fun but as the night progresses things start to get a bit chaotic and messy, with the increasing intoxication ultimately leading to a total collapse and passing out. Well, that’s not all birthday parties, but you get the idea here.
