The System - Almost Grown
This track by The System — not the other The System I posted about before — was recommended to me by a friend in this confusion of names. This instance here about the far more obscure UK synth-pop band of the same name.
Aaah! - Slip Away
A buried, minimal synth gem from this short-lived Cornwall-based group from the 1980s. Like many groups doing DIY synth music at this time across the globe they offer a hidden flash of brilliance with this track.
Add N To (X) - Revenge Of The Black Regent
Coming back onto my musical radar recently after a long gap, this epic, classical music influenced track of punk-influenced electronics is a standout for this UK group who released a run of albums on Mute Records.
David Sylvian & Ryuichi Sakamoto - Bamboo Houses
One of my favourite track collaborations between David Sylvian of Japan and Ryuichi Sakamoto, who is actually Japanese — a track that fills in the winter vibes very nicely.
The VSS - Nervous Circuits
A late 90s, cult, synth-inflected post-hardcore classic — one I’ve written about here and there before — the closing title track of this American band’s one and only LP gets taken up with a unique angle here.
Uncanny Valley - Seeds
Having had interactions with members of this band over the years — whether it’s being in the same tour van or in friendship — here’s look at an interesting track from an incredibly underrated post-industrial album Ugashia by the this group formed in London UK out another group, Noi Kabát.
Moral Support - Living With Passion
This track is a slower-paced disco “chugger” by the Canadian electronic production duo Moral Support, who like a number of other similar Canadian electronic artists of the time were making more of a splash with Hi-ENG and minimal synth tracks over in Europe.
This Is The Bridge - Don't Want To See Your Face
A stand-out, unique track from the recent album Vanishing Point by UK synthesizer artist This Is The Bridge, adding to his catalogue of prolific output.
Savage - Don't Cry Tonight
Releasing a string of slower-paced, romantic italo hits in the mid-1980s including “Don’t Cry Tonight”, some of these tracks by Savage sound oddly similar to one another!
Junko Ohashi - Dancin'
Possibly the most well-known track by this Japanese vocalist — a slice of synth-y electro-funk — from a career spanning around 50 years.
Psychic Graveyard - Eyes Are Turning
This track from the band’s newest 2024 album Wilting— featuring members of Arab On Radar, Doomsday Student, etc — offers a soundtrack to danceable psychosis, built on the back of their history of musical output.
Moev - Rotting Geraniums
During a recent visit to Vancouver that’s currently wrapping up, a nice haul of records was found, including a number of Canadian underground classics such as this early EP and its title track “Rotting Geraniums” by Moev.
The System - It's Passion
A 1982 classic by this US electro-funk duo from their standout 1983 album Sweat. It’s a track that has some minimal wave parallels and an early version sung by Madonna!
Ike Yard - NCR
From the band’s groundbreaking 1982 self-titled release, “NCR” merges post-punk attitude with rhythmic electronics in a tense, sombre yet serene tone and has been a favourite for a long time.
Saâda Bonaire - The Facts
“The Facts” by this German music collective combines stark EBM-style electronics and ethnic sounds, released in their self-titled album in 2013, around 30 years after it was originally recorded.
Drexciya - Dehydration
After being on the edge of my mind for years now, I finally dug in deep to Detroit electro duo Drexciya and some items in their back catalogue, including this track.
Tres - Operator
A classic minimal wave track from 1985 by Sweden’s Tres called “Operator”, posted here ahead of their set at this year’s Waveteef festival.
The Faint - Call Call
The 1999 album Blank-Wave Arcade by synth punk group The Faint contains two tracks that cleverly share the same riff. Some déja vu action indeed!
Tomita - Aranjuez
An atmospheric and melancholy electronic track from the album Kosmos (1978) by Tomita, spurred on by hearing his soundtrack from the film Demon Pond.
Simple Minds - Theme For Great Cities
“Themes For Great Cities” by one of my faves from that era, Glasgow’s Simple Minds, opens 1981’s Sister Feelings Call… or Sons And Fascination?
Alessandri - Reflections In My Mind
“Reflections” is an italo disco B-Side by Alessandri, which has a structure and chord progression which was used in another similar track before.
