Today is the release day for two new Soft Riot tracks on two separate releases, the first being this fundraiser for humanitarian aid to those who need it in Palestine. The compilation, entitled Goths For Palestine, features a completely new track entitled “Scraping For Signs” as well as great contributions from other artists such as Vision Video, Traitrs, Dancing Plague, Zanias, Horror Vacui as well as the maestro of the compilation — finnish solo synth artist Suzi Sabotage — and Belgrado, whom which one of the band members has created the cover artwork for this compilation. All proceeds go to the aid charity Anera which provides refugee aid to those in Palestine, Lebanon and Jordan.
“Scraping For Signs” was written in mid 2023 and then lay dormant for about a year during a break in songwriting. It was then revisited this autumn with some re-records at Studio Carillon in Glasgow. Mastered for this track provided by Josh Stevenson at Otic Sound.
You can purchase and listen to the compilation below through BandCamp:
Lyrics
There are moments when days start to sting
Walking into walls, multifold doors
You see yourself released much like a bird
Into the dizzy heights you can’t ignore
Molting the burdens you don’t need no more
A recite of past trails of travel
Opportunities that get ignored
Setting the trap, a honeyed funnel
Locked in golden handcuffs
You can’t stall it away
You can’t push it away
Or wits start to stray
When it all moves to play
Momentum tends to weigh
A balance between what you abhor and adore
Scraping for signs
To soothe your mind
In the motions of time
Escalation of what starts to sting
In a modern life — seemingly more and more
Understanding of how the structure works
Plays on your conscience more and more
The semantics mutate into a bore
And you see yourself much like a bird
Shedding minutiae that’s now a chore
Destroy and rebuild
Scraping for new signs
You can’t stall it away
You can’t push it away
Or wits start to stray
When it all moves to play
Momentum tends to weigh
This everlasting friction thirsts for more
Scraping for signs
For clues that align
Riddles unwind
In the motions of time
