“After finishing up the writing process for “No.” in early autumn 2022, I took a short break and came back to trying out ideas for a follow up. I wasn’t in the right headspace for new Soft Riot tracks and didn’t like any of the ideas. Time from there was mainly used up getting No. out as a release in mid-2023, along with all the production, promotion and video creation work associated with that record.
“So in addition to that, I used creative time to ‘cleanse the palette’ and work on some new, slower, spacier experimental, instrumental jams in the vein of Chin Up or Sudden Vision Zones — the latter being the first Ostrofti release. I’ve written the tracks for Split Infinitives under that moniker.
“It was a nice break from “pop” structured songs — ones that have drum beats, verses, choruses — and to work on something that had some distance from playing live, scenes, genres, etc. If anything the creative process for Split Infinitives gave a fresh perspective on new Soft Riot material, which track writing for is now well underway as of summer 2024 with a renewed perspective.”
This second release as Ostrofti offers a wider range of sounds over shorter compositions than the first (Sudden Vision Zones), injecting subtle rhythms and more mechanical counterpoint to the compositions in moods varying from introspection and internal reflection, to subtle feelings of cinematic unease. Most tracks were written with intuition in mind, with many compositions written in one session, or within a condensed period of time to capture the visual colour and character of each track.
